iTunes Program

Basic Information :

Itunes is a very well known digital media player that is used to upload songs, movies, podcasts, and more, to your iPod, which is the world's most popular music player. Itunes was launched and ready for use on January 9th, 2001. It's available for download with the systems of Mac, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP, at Apple's website. The program of itunes was based off another music player devoloped by Jeff Robbin and Bill Kincaid, called SoundJam MP. Apple bought off the creators and called the program their own in the year 2000. But new features were added like the ability to burn CDs. Itunes originally started out as an application for Mac only. The next version, it was available for other operating systems. In Version 3, they had added playlists and a ratings system. The next Version is when itunes hit off even more than it had already, because they had began to include the program for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Eventually, Apple decided they wanted to go further with itunes so it could spread even more. So they added the feature to be able to upload your music library to your phone. What makes itunes such a hit is the fact that there is such a wide range of things to download. From music to movies, from podcasts to ringtones, it's more than satisfying. The cost of songs can make you lose some dough, with the 99 cent fee per song download. That's why some people resort to illegal programs, for example LimeWire and FrostWire, and transfer the songs to their itunes library. I admit that I do this as well. Regardless, itunes is easy to use, and has a wide range of things to download, which is why it's the king of music downloading.

Setup & Support :

To download itunes all you have to do is visit Apple's website, find the itunes download, enter your email adress, and you're set. The download process can take some time. It also takes up a nice amount of your computer's space. But it is worth it. The program is only available for iPods, but you can still download it for your personal use. Once you have completed the downloading process, you must create an account, if you would like to download anything. If you would simply like to browse through the store, that is also an option, and requires no account creation. As previously stated, itunes is compatible with Mac, PC, and Windows. It is not supported by older operating systems, sadly. Aside from this process, itunes is very easy to get the hang of. If you have a brain and two opposable thumbs, you can work the program. But if for some reason you get stuck, and find yourself in need of assistance, Apple does provide you with help. Their technical support is said to be outstanding, and they have step-by-step tutorials found out their site, along with a FAQ for your easy to answer questions. Just visit apple.com for the download, and for any help.

Features :

The first feature I will mention is one of my personal favorites, and is known as the Cover Flow. The Cover Flow allows you to scroll through your albums to access your music, in a unique way. You simply move your mouse along the list, and as it hovers over a paticular album, that album jumps up on your screen to be displayed over the others. You can then click the album and the list of songs will be displayed for you to choose which you would like to listen to. Or you could also double click the album for it to play from the beginning. The album's art you see as you browse through your music using Cover Flow, looks pretty cool. But if you think it's too hard to use it, or just don't like it, you can switch to the normal way, which is a list running down the program. You can order it by songs, artists, albums, ratings, etc. Another feature worth mentioning is the multi-file format support. It supports the file formats of MP3, AIFF, WAV, MPEG-4, AAC, and Apple Lossless. This is a nice feature because it can convert the most commonly used audio format files, to your library. Apple suffers from this because this is how everyone gets away with using illegal programs such as LimeWire, but it appeals to it's users in such a way that Apple is afraid to change it to only one file format support. Not only can itunes converts the formats, but it plays the audio with such high quality. This is because of the sound processing features. For example, the equalization, sound enhancement, and crossfade features. This is what brings the audio such great quality. Aside from the audio features, there are some decent video support features as well. You can upload movies from your computer on to your itunes movie library, which is very appealing. You can also purchase or rent movies, and TV shows from the itunes store. Now that I've gone through the main underlooked features that make itunes what it is, I'd like to mention the favorite of many itunes users. Some of you may know it, it's called Genius. This up-to-date attribute was recently introduced in itunes version 8. The Genius feature generates a playlist of songs that are similar to the song you have selected for Genius to create the playlist based off of. Many people wonder how it does this. Well, they base it off the song's algorithms. The genius feature is similar to the site pandora.com. These features are what makes itunes irresistible.

iTunes Store :

With the introduction to Version 4, the itunes store came in. This is where itunes users can buy and download songs, videos, podcasts, ringtones, etc. It was announced to be released at the Macworld Conference & Expo. Apple also announced that there would be changes in their price range. Songs costed 69 cents, 99 cents, or $1.29. Then, movies, music videos, applications, etc. have been added to the iTunes Store's. On January 6, 2009, Phil Schiller announced in his Macworld 2009 keynote speech that over 6 billion songs had been downloaded since the service first launched on April 28, 2003, making it the largest online music store in the world. At the previous Macworld Expo 2008, Apple CEO Steve Jobs stated that the service had set a new single day record of 20 million songs on December 25, 2007. He also said that the iTunes Store will put up over 1,000 movies for download and rental by the end of February. The iTunes Store is yet another thing, that makes itunes such a hit, and a must-download.

Well done Sk10!

I know that you included it in your sources, but a lot was copied off of Wikipedia and C-Net and then edited. Razz

No. I don't copy and paste in reviews. I read from a bunch of other sites summarize their beliefs on it (in my own words..) and add my own opinion on it. Isn't that reviewing ? If i only included what i knew about it, it wouldn't be very informative.

What I was trying to say was that it was very similar, and you did use your own words.

You did a good job.

iTunes is a media player. Ein, reviews are supposed to be in no later then a week.. If you're so 'busy' maybe you shouldn't be a reviewer.
